❤ Post-Jam Update V1.1.5 is now LIVE, including new features, bug fixes, quality of life changes, and updates to the gameplay balance. You can read the patch notes below. This is the final update before we release a new game.

Developed within 48 hours for GameMaker Toolkit's 2021 Game Jam, Helm’s Oddity is a Game Boy themed Zelda-like game, where you turn cute monsters into powerful allies! Join together with monsters to explore Mercury Temple!

Helm needs your help! As a monster tamer, she lives her life with the monsters of the world—such as feeding and taking care of them. To show her dedication to monsters, she wants to throw a party for them, but needs the sacred ingredients to prepare an amazing feast! You can possess monsters to fight, solve puzzles, and explore the world! Swim through deep water, extinguish fires, and sail over the deepest crevices! There’s much to discover in Helm’s Oddity!

Gameplay:
Throw hearts to possess and command monsters for a few seconds. If you miss, you’ll lose a heart, so be careful! You can also use a stick to attack monsters, but you won’t be able to solve puzzles as easily. Break jars with your sword for the chance to pick up hearts to replenish your health! Unlock doors with keys, hit switches to uncover secrets, and search the Mercury Temple for a secret item that Helm needs!

Controls:
WASD/Arrow Keys: Player movement
J: Swing Sword/Open Chests/Open Doors/Confirm Text
K: Heart Throw (Possess Monsters)/End Possession (As Monster)

Abilities:
Turtle: Can surf in deep water.
Octopus: Can douse flames with a short-range water attack.
Mouse: Can blow monsters away with powerful bubbles.

Features:
• Explore a deep dungeon, featuring puzzles, cute monsters, and a tired boss.
• Join together with monsters to overcome various obstacles in creative ways.
• Discover new paths with a wide variety of monsters at your disposal.
• Beautiful music and sound effects composed in an 8 bit environment.
• Experience a classic action-adventure game presented in a Game Boy style.

It's a bit frustrating that missed Heart Throws remove hearts, but the concept is very cool!
